China shows the way for Danish exports in times of crisis

Danish exports have been badly affected since the start of the financial crisis and the resulting decline in global economic activity. But amid the crisis Danish companies have still been able to maintain positive growth in their exports to China. This is good news because in the longer perspective it is essential for Danish exports to succeed in the two largest Asian growth markets, China and India.

The general trend for Danish exports has been downward since October 2008 with decreases in monthly exports of up to 22%. But when it comes to China the picture is quite different. Except for December 2008, exports to China have grown every month since the crisis started, compared with the same month a year earlier.

In the long run there are grounds for optimism with regard to exports to China and India. Even during the economic decline, both India and China have been able to keep up significant growth rates. The International Monetary Fund assessed in its latest prognosis from April 2009 that India, despite the crisis, will grow by 4.5% this year and 5.6% next year. In the same period, the Chinese economy is expected to grow by 6.5% and 7.5%.
